Happy Friday! It’s taper week in the Active Harmony household, as both we prepare for our first races of 2014 this weekend! There’s been equal parts relaxation, beach walks, carb eating, and nervous excitement. Oh, and juicing. LOTS of juicing. Seven days of it to be exact, and we wanted to share our experience and recipes with you thus far.
We mentioned the Nutribullet we purchased for a sweet deal at the beginning of December, and the start of the new year seemed like the perfect time to incorporate it into our daily routine. We made a big Costco shopping trip about 10 days ago to pick up bulk produce and low prices. It looks like we’ll need to go about about twice a month.
For most of us, it’s almost impossible to get the daily recommended servings of fruits and veggies. But with the Nutribullet, we’re 99% sure we’ve ingested more spinach in one week than we probably would in a month! Add to that what we like to think of as “healthy mix-ins”: apple, celery, banana, frozen mix berries, oranges, kale, etc., and the combinations are limitless!
We’ve found that our best strategy is to make one-half of the drink in the morning, and take the other half to work to drink later as a snack. Not too many greens at one time, and we feel like we’re focusing on our health all day.
Here was our shopping list for 7 days of green drink recipes (Note: this amount is for 2 people):
- 2.5 lbs spinach
- 1.5 lbs. kale
- 10 stalks celery
- 6 oz avocado
- 10 bananas
- 6 oranges
- 4 apples
- 8 c frozen fruit
We like to mix and match, but we typically go 2 cups greens (spinach, kale or a combo) to 1 cup of fruit. As we discover our favorite recipes, we’ll be sure to share them with you!
As for our big race weekend, it’s here! G’s 50-mile trail race, the SD 50, is tomorrow and C’s first shot at a marathon PR will come bright and early Sunday at the Carlsbad Marathon. We both have Monday off (thank goodness), so stay tuned for race recaps!
Have a wonderful weekend!
G and C

Good luck this weekend! I’m sure you will both do great. You definitely sound well prepared!
Thanks so much, Andrea!
That’s awesome! Good Luck!
Thank you! We’re definitely excited!
While I can’t get on board with all the juicing and carb loading, I can get on board with the jitters. Good luck to you all. Hope to hear about some PRs come Monday.
Ha! It’s funny that juicing became part of taper week madness … maybe it was keeping us busy in the mornings when we would typically be running. Thank you!
Thanks for following! Great blog.
Absolutely! We really enjoy your blog as well. Have a great week!
Hope this weekend turned out OK for the both of you. Definitely going to have to show this recipe to my other half so we can try it this week. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Dylan! The races went really well, and we had a lot of fun. Look for recaps this week! Also, let us know how you like the green drink recipes!
